‘Dainis’

This little-known variety from Southwest Latvia certainly deserves more recognition both for its large and sweet fruits and good tolerance to diseases. The cultivar was obtained by Viesturs Šterns in the Medze parish. He is also the author of other good apple cultivars, of which ‘Dzintariņš’ and ‘Aivariņš’ are included in our collection. Viesturs Šterns is the representative of an outstanding dynasty of horticulturists. His father Jānis Šterns is the author of a highly popular gooseberry cultivar ‘Kuršu Dzintars’. In 2019 a memorial orchard was established at Kapsēde, centre of Medze parish, where apple-trees of Viesturs Šterns varieties were planted.
