‘Åkerö’

Åkerö

This old Swedish cultivar dates from 1759, but to Latvia it was introduced only about 1900. From the beginning ‘Åkerö’ was recommended for its high winter-hardiness and good fruit quality. Later it became clear that the trees are enormous and have late start of bearing. Another drawback is the easy wind-drop of fruits. This variety still is in good memory in Latvia, but its trees are now found only in old orchards. In Sweden it remains one of the favourites. During years of cultivation, several clones have developed with various colour intensity.
