Siberian crab apple

The Siberian crab is the most hardy apple species tolerating extreme cold. Its fruits are very small and consist almost completely of seeds and peel. This species was often used for breeding of ornamental varieties. Most hardy crab-apple cultivars with edible fruits also descend from it.
