‘Valtera Sarkanā’

The breeder Jānis Valters worked in Southwestern Latvia, Medze parish, in the middle of 20^th century. In his time, he became known for his pear varieties, which now are rarely found. The orchard which he planted has been lost, too. Some of his apple cultivars have survived in collections, of which ‘Valtera Sarkanā’ is the most interesting. In spring it bears beautiful purple flowers, and in August the tree bears large, sweet apples with brownish yellow skin.
