Apple cultivars 'Lora' and 'Auce' have been applied for registration

Two new apple cultivars were submitted for registration - apple tree 'Lora' and ornamental apple 'Auce' on February 12, 2020. 

 

Apple ‘Lora’

Obtained in 2003 at Institute of Horticulture (LatHort), cross ‘Lodel’ x ‘Rubin’ (Kazakhstan cv.). Breeder’s rights – Institute of Horticulture, application Nr.20001 12.02.2020. Author: Laila Ikase.
A late apple with good storage, suitable for the climate of Latvia. Harvest time –medium to late, stores 6 months or longer. 

Fruits are attractive, medium or larger (130-160 g), uniform, tolerant to bruises. Fruit shape flattened globose, ribbing medium, at eye narrow. Eye basin is shallow and narrow. Eye is semi-open, medium size, with thin, medium long sepals. Stalk cavity deep or medium, narrow, russet weak or medium. Stalk medium or long, rather thick. 

Over-colour is bright red, uniform with weak stripes and light lenticels, covers most of fruit. Ground colour is yellow. Skin is thick, with weak to medium bloom, medium greasy. Fruit flesh is medium firm, yellowish, aromatic, subacid, flavour good or very good. Firmness 4.7...5.4 kg cm-2, soluble solids 12.45...16.45oBrix, titrable acids 0.66% (sugar:acid ratio 18.9), total polyphenols 117.7 mg 100g-1.

Locules are closed or slightly open. Seeds rather large, long ovate, brown or light brown. Tree compact, yields early and abundant, annual. Fruit thinning is obligatory for good size. Tree vigour is below medium, crown spreading, fruiting mostly on spurs, but also tips. 
Shoots are reddish brown, medium thick with medium long internodes, pubescence medium, lenticels medium. 

Leaves on young shoots point upwards or outwards, small, short, medium wide or wide, colour medium green, pubescence of lower side weak. Leaf margin is crenate. Stalk medium long, anthocyanin medium. 
Flowering is early to medium. Flower buds are pink, flowers medium size, petals touching, stigma the same length or longer than anthers. Medium susceptible to spring frosts.
Resistances: high polygenic tolerance to scab and fruit rots. Susceptible to canker in unfavourable conditions. 
Positive traits: high and regular productivity; compact tree easy in training; good fruit quality and storage; high tolerance to scab and fruit rots. 
Drawbacks: a tendency to overbearing; susceptible to canker in unfavourable conditions. 

Ornamental apple ‘Auce’

Obtained in 2005 at Institute of Horticulture (LatHort), cross ‘Top Millionaire’ x D-1-92-42 (‘Arbat’ x ‘Forele’). Breeder’s rights – Institute of Horticulture, application Nr.20002 12.02.2020. Author – Laila Ikase. 
Tree small, compact, crown upright, later upright spreading, branching sparse. Flowering and production abundant, with a tendency to bienniality. 

Shoots dark brown, pubescent, medium thick. 
Leaves in spring purple red, glossy, in summer greenish red, in autumn greenish yellow. Leaf blade medium long, narrow, margin serrate, stalk long. 
Flowering medium early. Flower buds dark pink. Flowers medium size, purple red, with a tendency of fading. Petals elliptic, slightly ruffled, touching, veins medium. Petal margin and middle part both inside and outside reddish purple (RHS 67C), colour of base lighter (RHS 62D), with a white stripe through the middle of petals. 
Fruits - crab type, relatively large (30-36 mm, 40-45 g), roundish, flattened at ends, ribbing medium. Skin dark purple. Calyx closed, large, with long recurving sepals, eye basin wide, medium deep. Stalk rather (10-20 mm), thin, stalk cavity wide, medium deep. Locules closed, seeds brown, oval. 
Fruit flesh red, medium firm, juicy, with pleasant subacid flavour and weak tannins. Suitable for processing, juice has high sensory evaluation. Juice outcome 55.2%, rich biochemical content – soluble solids 16.5oBrix, titrable acids 1.5% (sugar:acid ratio 11), total polyphenols 263 mg 100 g-1. 
Ripening late, mid-October, hold well on tree.
Tolerant to scab and other diseases.

Positive traits: small red-leaved tre with good ornamental value during flowering and fruiting; tolerant to diseases; fruits suitable for processing.
Drawbacks: a tendency to bienniality.
