The ERDF project on the interaction between host Pyrus communis and pathogen Gymnosporangium sabinae includes the acquisition of new knowledge about the mechanisms of plant-pathogen interaction, their potential use in breeding, as well as the development of international cooperation and gaining experience.

The benefits of international cooperation are as follows:

  • experience and knowledge on the use of modern phenotyping methods (training in Finland, Helsinki);
  • insight into the use of new data analysis capabilities and technologies (training in Norway, Dombås);
  • modern resistance breeding methods used in Wädenswil, Switzerland (Agroscope, breeding and fruit genetic resources group);
  • as well as development of personal skills by participation in the preparation, planning and implementation of experimental methodologies.

Participation in the experimental trials improved also the practical skills in recognition and assessment of various disease symptoms. A joint experiment was initiated with Swiss colleagues with the aim of gaining knowledge about the peculiarities of plant-pathogen interactions in different regions.
