On Monday, June 16, the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) hosted a seminar on the interim results of the project “Scientifically Based Solutions for a Sustainable Food System to Achieve the Goals of the European Green Deal”*, part of the national research program “Exploration and Sustainable Use of Local Resources for the Development of Latvia” (2023–2025).

The seminar was attended by researchers involved in the project from the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics, the Institute of Horticulture, and the Scientific Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment “BIOR.” They presented the work completed so far and shared the interim results achieved.

The research covers several important issues related to food production — including the analysis of possibilities to reduce the use of pesticides and the impact of plant pathogens, the evaluation of antimicrobial resistance spread in livestock herds, and the development of solutions for the creation of high value-added products. Special attention is also given to the possibilities of a circular economy, including the development of innovative biodegradable packaging materials from agricultural by-products.

The project duration is 1.5 years, with a total funding of 2 million euros. The goal of the project is to provide scientifically grounded support for MoA’s sectoral policy development — in agriculture, food, fisheries, and environmental fields — while promoting a transition toward sustainable and competitive industry development in line with the strategic objectives of the European Green Deal.
