Addressing the Challenges of Climate Change

For the fifth time, scientists from the Institute of Horticulture welcomed guests to the international scientific conference “Sustainable Horticulture: From Plant to Product”, which this year focused on the challenges of temperate climates.
In three days - from August 20 to 22 the conference gathered 63 participants from 7 countries, who presented 23 oral and 31 short reports covering a wide range of horticultural science topics. Alongside presentations and short reports, participants had the opportunity to visit the Institute of Horticulture and learn more about Latvian horticultural farms.
Key themes included:
Sustainable Practices in Vegetable Production,
Advancements in Knowledge for Smart Farming and Plant Protection,
Biodiversity and Innovations in Horticultural Crop Breeding,
Green Chemistry and Sustainable Food Processing.
The conference highlighted that cooperation, interdisciplinarity, and the application of modern technologies are essential to reduce the negative impacts of climate change. Many questions remain—about plant–environment interactions as well as the development of effective tools and methods for growers—creating broad opportunities for future scientific research.
Beyond sharing research results, the event fostered meaningful conversations and mutual knowledge exchange, laying a foundation for future collaborations. This strengthens not only the research capacity of the Institute but also the knowledge transferred to the industry, helping it to better address present and emerging challenges.
