About lilacs in Latvia
The lilac has been cultivated in Latvia since the 19th century. Over time, it has become an integral part of Latvian household splendor and the blossoming urban landscape.
The renowned gardener and plant-breeder Peteris Upitis (1896-1976), who was an artist at heart, also took an interest in photography, poetry, and music, and was the founder of the lilac garden collection.
The lilac garden collection is created based on lilac cultivars and hybrids bred by P. Upitis, complimenting them with cultivars from other countries. The purpose of the collection is to preserve and maintain cultivars and hybrids created by P. Upitis, as well as to introduce the visitors to the diversity of lilacs and the work of the plant breeders. Since its creation, the lilac garden has become a popular attraction in Dobele, attracting many visitors.
The lilac garden has the largest lilac collection in the Baltic States – it has 240 lilac cultivars. Every year, during the blossoming of the lilacs, a classical music concert is held.
